The sand was warmer than you imagine when it's December all over your world and we were standing in part of that field where nobody's grass can grow At our feet there lay a man I carried on my shoulder he could rationalise the way things were long after love was over so we all bow our head the poor boy is dead and we're saying goodbye to a fool A dog he barked at the gaping sea a human voice broke through the wind and just like the breeze we were sad because we didn't want anyone to hear About this man who danced his broken heart around the maypole the one that intrigued us all to mourn who could passively behave so self defeating and resist the many hammer blows of scorn so we all bow our head the poor boy is dead and we're saying goodbye to a fool But now it's time to walk the stony shores of grieving and taste the bitter sweet from far behind for in loves wild obsession there is neither rhyme or reason let this stormy ocean sink, dilute and hide so we all bow our head the poor boy is dead and we're saying goodbye to a fool

Switch on the harbour lights I've got a pocket full of money clean up the empty space where my coat is hanging don't let's talk anymore about individuality a thousand miles away and I can see that you're lonely see me now I'm running you can catch me if you can where the changing role of woman meets the brotherhood of man rake out my old grey shoes I feel like dancing tell my friends the news my plane is landing don't let's talk anymore let's reach an understanding if we were young and in love they'd simply call it romancing see me now I'm running you can catch me if you can where the changing role of woman meets the brotherhood of man You can go on knocking on my door ringing on my telephone you can exercise your prerogative boy when you leave a poor girl alone see me now I'm running you can catch me if you can where the changing role of woman meets the brotherhood of man Switch on the harbour lights I feel like dancing rake out my old grey shoes from a lifetime of romancing don't let's talk anymore my plane is landing we could start things new in a modern understanding see me now I'm running you can catch me if you can where the changing role of woman meets the brotherhood of man

Compromise 03:16
I guess today has been that sort of day right from the start has looked like rain every contact made just an awkward mild transaction like vendors selling hope consumed by strangers I guess this road is one that I've walked down before a telephone that doesn't seem to take incoming calls a frightened blank refusal to face this cold charade maintaining those acquaintances that find this so bizarre That's how it is with you and I trying hard to live within this compromise I know we should adopt a very different state of mind It's time to cross the 'T's and dot the 'I's It's hard to say who is the older and the wise ribbons, roads or shoe strings which one have we to tie mindfully indifferent to a game we can't disguise we take the flowing bowl and raise it high We are both in a very long play we are the stars with lots to say social innuendos we largely just ignore implying dreams and kisses we abandoned long ago That's how it is with you and I trying hard to live within this compromise I know we should adopt a very different state of mind It's time to cross the 'T's and dot the 'I's living here within this compromise

Take me down to the heart of your city with its motor boats and large cathedral watch the world at play on a sunny day bring me back to my own free country clouded hills and bike rides finding another way of being but what's the point in all this wondering if no-one shares your bright new feeling If I told you I miss you I'd be understating my case No circumstance of hope dividing no secret moments when you lay down beside me we'll follow the daylight while it's here and go down where people gather take our restraint where heaven knows what we've found could last forever If they say we need each other speculate like we're sister and brother they may say we two are lovers but they'd be understating their case If I told you I miss you I'd be understating my case

The Seagull 03:42
Round and round in circles falls the snow and the seagull he's a long long way from home so I guess it must be warmer here today for I'm sure it's not the place he'd chose to stay If he could he'd be back fishing in the harbour never thinking he would have to fly inland so now I understand why the schemes of birds and man never pass beyond the limits of the dreamer There's a Blackbird standing on the frozen ground he is clinging to a piece of bread he's found but I know that it's not always been this way there was food in every corner yesterday but for now it's just a question of survival hoping someday soon the sun will shine again but we go on making plans that we know will never end though there's a message written in the frozen snow For I walked my dog around this frozen lake where the beauty of the winter led the way I realised seasons have to change and people who believe must do the same when I looked beneath the bridge I saw a stream and all my old ambitions pass away so why it takes so long just to write a simple song I thank God he brought the seagull to my home I thank God he brought the seagull to my home

It's Friday morning 5am here I am alone in this station somewhere along the line I came upon a friend of mine I don't know why I'm happy , but I am And it was really good to see you again good to hear how you've been getting on you really should come and see me more often I spend my evenings now and then suitably contained in the company of men while we put the world to right affairs of heart don't spoil our night so when I talk like this they don't understand How in tentative manoeuvres we remembered words we dare not speak for wounded hearts don't talk impulsively But it was really good to see you again good to hear how you've been getting on I only wish I could see you more often

This Picture 04:14
I once took down a box from your eyelid and looked at the picture inside to find new ways of trying and behaving that could put away the things I know you hide for if you knew how much I love you we would never say never again and this picture could wait within the frame I know lately we've been lost inside the maze while this fairy tale keeps turning page by page there's been times you left me crying through the day and times when you just seem to get in my way but this capstan is still waiting on the harbour though the signal shines so dim among the haze this voyage we have made with both our laughter leaving friends upon the shoreline to wait and pray but if they knew how much I love you this picture could wait within the frame While the Eagle flies in circles over Sinai and these tablets made of stone begin to weigh These hearts of ours which never fell to anger could dance again in green and open space so let this lazy stream of ours meander and take us past the concrete and the clay let's not think about tomorrow or forever but celebrate this bridge we left in place for if you knew how much I love you we would never say never again and this picture could wait within the frame

A19 03:34
Red brick bus shelters from nowhere stand alone where no-one waits There's 'yuppies' buying windmills making gains without their sails There are Motels on the corner they have dinosaurs at their gates but he won't be patronising he's already running late Up in sheds and bovine citadels they exchange a soulful gaze There's blots upon the Cleveland Hills bouncing Cell Phone rays there are chimneys down steel river they swear it's only steam but to him they are just distractions on this trunk road A19 For there's a woman in a floral town pretending not to wait keeping clear her diary , making sure he gets some space and he knows he'll be forgotten if he let's her down again so he can't afford distractions on this trunk road A19 When he gets down God's own county he could chance himself to luck and meander down through country lanes from an old vet surgeons book but some mean old Massey Fergusson might pull out in his way and add to his frustration putting minutes on his day For there's a woman in a floral town pretending not to wait keeping clear her diary , making sure he gets some space and he knows he'll be forgotten if he let's her down again so he can't afford distractions on this trunk road A19

It was one year after 70 in Bradford steep and dull liquid gold depleted on the strength of just one tune bring him all back home , set him down play songs without a score same model as Vin Garbutt and even Christy Moore Which through the gloom became the shelter of my night and in the cold light on the morning became the silence here inside From a marquee down in Manchester with a girl upon my case we modified with templates by the boys in Naches Trace and throughout the old west riding in hidden agenda rooms ignoring hints and warnings we might hit the heights too soon We travelled widely down to Bexhill Upon Sea pre-occupied in Bedfordshire and all along the Tees scorching hills of Conemara to a freeze in Amsterdam performed without complaining brought me safe through bed-sit land Ah now history will never confine him to sale or spare and replacements must evolve from this warn old Yamaha which through the gloom became the shelter of my night and in the cold light of the morning became the silence here inside
